WMF Lono Grill and Plancha test: good performance at an affordable price

The convenience of use

Lono Grill and Plancha is more for use in the center of the table. Thus, there is no need for opposing edges so that all guests can access the hob, risking grease and juice spilling onto the table. Therefore, protection is highly recommended. The table, on the other hand, is pretty well protected from the heat. The device includes a bottom, and the resistance itself is taken in a metal casing under the stove.

This plate covers a total area of ​​27 x 41 cm. It is not particularly large, but this is not a problem since the device is used on a table.

While WMF has made stainless steel its specialty, the Lono Grill and Plancha plates are made from die-cast aluminum with a non-stick coating. Amateur chefs should enjoy it, but precautions are needed: avoid touching food with metal utensils such as cutlery; this is rather paradoxical for a tabletop grill.

The famous Cromargan, the manufacturer’s trademark for stainless steel, has not been forgotten. It is located on the tower of the device. Thus, here he plays a purely decorative role, which remains conspicuous for a device designed to sit on a throne in the middle of the table. We find the Lono Grill and Plancha much more elegant than the Tefal Colormania plancha with their flashy plastics, but still beware of heat strokes: this tower can get very hot during use.

The hob presented here is still distinguished by the fact that it has grooves on one side and is smooth on the other. So it should offer a grill function on the first and a tablet on the other, but that doesn’t make much of a difference in use, especially since there’s only one resistance provided here. Therefore, it is not possible to set up these two zones independently of each other, unlike the Riviera & Bar QPL665 or the double Krampouz Plancha Saveur.

The selector, however, allows you to adjust the power of the entire surface in 5 levels. We’d have preferred to find a real temperature-reading thermostat, but that’s more reserved for high-end tablets, as is the stainless steel at the hob level.

The glowing ring around the selector lets you know if the Lono Grill and Plancha are heating up and therefore ready to use. Despite the non-stick coating, a drop of oil can be used, but you do not need to pour a lot. It should also be noted that the drip pan for collecting fat and juice is quite small; so it is better to limit fat. On the other hand, the drip system in the center of the dish is quite effective.

After use, the plate can be removed at the touch of a button, and the relatively small size of the WMF makes it easy to store in a cabinet. However, we regret that the cable is not removable to further facilitate storage.

Ease of maintenance

Obviously, the WMF Lono grill and plancha must be cleaned after each use. It is recommended to leave it to cool for 1 hour, but the residue can be removed with a cloth while it is still warm to make it easier to remove.

Due to the non-stick coating, rubbing with an abrasive sponge is clearly not recommended. Once the plate has cooled down, the button releases it for easy cleaning. It is possible to do this by hand, with a sponge and dishwashing liquid, but be aware that the resistance sticks to the plate, which can make it difficult to handle in the sink. The plate can also be washed in the dishwasher.

In addition to the dish, it is important to clean the drip tray, taking care not to tip it over when you take it out and bring it to the sink. It is not very deep, so it can fill up quickly. Can also be washed in the dishwasher.

Finally, the body of the device can be wiped with a damp cloth. Due to the lack of splash-proof edges, the part surrounding the plate eject button is particularly susceptible to cooking oil during use. We also found some grease under the plate during our test, but wiping it with a sponge is enough to clean it.

Cooking

WMF has equipped its grill/tablet with a 2300W heating element. In combination with a 5-stage dimmer mounted directly below the plate, it provides fast heating. It took only 2 minutes and 20 seconds to reach our reference temperature (230°C) on the wafer surface by setting the device to maximum power. Performance that only two models have surpassed: Senya’s Plancha Time and Tefal’s Plancha Colormania.

When the WMF model heats up, the temperature rises to about 290°C, then drops, and then rises again. This time it stops at around 240°C, more suitable for cooking. Therefore, it is preferable not to rush when lighting a plate. The manufacturer also recommends preheating for 10 minutes before putting food on it.

Since we are looking for a temperature close to 230°C for our measurements, we were able to leave the drive on for 5. The surface temperature fluctuates between approximately 190°C and 240°C depending on the state of the resistor: the device heats up for about 30 seconds and allows the temperature to drop each once every 1 min 30 s. Other models use longer cycles and allow temperature changes of almost 100°C, such as Tefal’s Colormania and Gourmet Gourmet tablets and Severin’s KG2397. On the other hand, the QPL665 from Riviera & Bar manages to limit these fluctuations to 30°C, but the grill and plancha from WMF easily rank among the best appliances in our comparison by this criterion.

The state of resistance also depends on the uniformity of temperature on the surface of the plate, which does not allow uniform distribution of heat during heating. However, the differences are limited due to the resistance design: it covers the plate surface well. As soon as it stops working, drops disappear with it and a uniform temperature is obtained. So overall the device still works reasonably well, but the cooking note could have been even better without holes meant to drain cooking juices. Care must be taken to avoid them when placing food to cook, and their central position can complicate the operation.
