BMW has decided to enter the market for electric vehicles, where it is available only to a minority. The iX M60 electric SUV, with its phenomenal torque and sophisticated and luxurious looks, is a perfect illustration of this. What do you think of this unusual car?
A small comparison
The M60 version represents the latest and most powerful evolution of the BMW iX. Further xDrive50 seems calmer. Rather judge! Both models have 2 slip-ring motors, of which the front one develops 190 kW (258 hp). It is from behind that it flies away with a power of 364 kW (489 hp) versus 233 kW (313 hp) for the iX xDrive50.
Together they provide the driver with 455 kW (618 hp). Compared to 385 kW (523 hp) of the model we tested in September 2021. The maximum torque also changes significantly. It was 765 Nm, in the M60 it goes up to 1015 Nm (Sport mode), and even up to 1100 Nm when turned on. Launch control activated.
Without modifications, an NCA (Nickel-Cobalt-Aluminum) lithium-ion battery with a net energy capacity of 105.2 kWh per 111.5 kWh in total.
To best deliver the performance promised by BMW, the iX M60 is mounted on a custom chassis. It gets a recalibrated air suspension and an enlarged anti-roll bar. The driver can intervene from his seat in the setting of certain parameters that affect driving comfort.
The example we have is based on 22″ alloy wheels (standard 21″) fitted with wide tires but thin bead (275/40) specially designed by Pirelli for the beginner (+ 2150 euros). They barely hide the blue brake calipers with 4 pistons in the front and single pistons in the rear.
Our test BMW iX eschewed Alpine White by default. The red metallic Aventurine with which it is decorated costs 2,500 euros. This is underscored by bronze-coloured bars at the base of the side windows and exterior mirrors (+€650), as well as tinted black taillights. The driver will appreciate the standard laser headlights. Abbreviation ” M60 betrayed the electric SUV version. You can do without it, for free.
The dimensions of the BMW iX have been retained on the M60 version: 4.95 x 1.97 m in base area at a height of 1.70 m. The boot behind the tailgate does not seem very wide. Its volume increases from 500 liters to 1750 liters by folding the three-part backrest to form a flat floor. However, the relatively deep double bottom won’t let you store much more than a small emergency electric compressor and charging cables.
Passengers will be greeted on board by a thick carpet, and they will no doubt be surprised to notice the presence of a carbon fiber finish that for the first time strengthens the door frames. The latter are cleared of window casings. Smoke in the back, they don’t go all the way down.
The absence of a central service tunnel on the ground allows 3 people to sit on the bench seat with a fair amount of legroom. The 2 side-mounted passengers will get USB-C connectors, a variety of storage spaces including a hard chaplain, separate ventilation and heated seats.
The finish of this new electric car seems to be impeccable. Diamond-shaped buttons are used to adjust the heated and ventilated front multifunctional seats that are standard on the BMW iX M60. They are upholstered in leather with stitching, as is the dashboard.
The latter supports a curved row of two screens, respectively, 12.3 inches behind the steering wheel for instruments and a 14.9-inch touchscreen to its right for controlling vehicle functions. Compatible with Call CarPlay and Android Auto, it’s quite smooth and responsive, but not the most efficient on the market.
The smartphone app also allows you to remotely animate the vehicle. Not only by playing on battery power or temperature on board. You can also sound your horn, turn on your headlights, or lock your doors.
An unconventional steering wheel will inevitably be differently evaluated by car drivers. The left branch supports settings for driver assistance devices, including cruise control. The opposite is reserved for a multimedia system.
Three driving modes are available to the driver: Personal, Sport and Efficient. The latter is more suitable for development in the city, with the key on paper, the consumption is less. The size of the car implies a relatively large turning radius. Actually 12.3 m. Please note that the rear wheels turn slightly as standard for easier manoeuvring.
The first meters passed testify to the specific artificial sound for the M60 version of BMW’s electric SUV.
Machine weight 2.585 tons. And yet driving on country roads does not give a sense. The car’s good balance, air suspension clearance and fairly direct steering partly explain this impression. The braking system corresponds to the characteristics of the German electric SUV.
On the highway
On the highway, sport mode makes the powerful BMW iX even more energetic. We immediately understand that the estimated 3.8 s for acceleration to 100 km / h is not a random number. The xDrive50 version took 4.6 seconds. The maximum speed has also been revised upwards: 250 km/h versus 200 km/h. Even when driving already at a speed of 120 km / h, time seems monstrous.
” The M4 isn’t any better, you’ll have to get the 4WD xDrive model to follow through on acceleration, or the M5. “, compares Maxime Fontanier.
At high speeds, the steering remains light and well calibrated. Without laminated glazing, airborne noise is noticeable but not excessive for an SUV the size of a BMW iX. In addition, wide and sporty tires are easy to miss. ” We have quite exceptional sound comfort says our electric vehicle specialist.
Equipped for sign reading, the vehicle adapts its speed to road signs, making it easier to exit expressways, for example. The M60 version is equipped with all driving assistance systems as standard. ” He rides almost alone, this iX ”, our tester highly appreciates.
Special feature: The traction force of the BMW iX M60 is 2.5 tons. Maxime Fontagnier indicates that the cost of the coupling is 1250 euros. From May 23, 2022, the Limited Edition Pro package is available on the BMW France website for €5,300. Wanting to delete it results in this message being displayed: ” After updating the product offering, it is temporarily not possible to remove this option from your configuration. “.
However, among the 15 options included in this set, there is just a hitch. As well as the Sky Lounge panoramic glass roof, 4-zone automatic air conditioning, Park Assist Pro that allows you to steer the car from the outside into too narrow a parking space, hands-free key, closing doors without popping noises, DAB digital radio tuner, Bowers & Hi-Fi system Wilkins Diamond Surround Sound, etc.
Consumption and charging
During our test, connecting different locations, we recorded an average consumption of 24.3 kWh. Of course, high numbers, especially when compared with the Tesla Model Y. To a lesser extent, if you do this exercise with the Model X.
On the ultra-fast charger, the BMW iX M60 holds 195kW over a relatively large range. This was still the case at just over 60% battery. With the BMW app, there is no need to pull out the icon: charging can be started and stopped from a smartphone.
The BMW iX price list usually starts on May 23, 2022 at €86,450. However, the manufacturer’s website, without any action on your part, adds options that will quickly take you beyond this perimeter. Thus, even if you choose the entry-level package, you already cost 94,060 euros. It hurts ! You should go and check what has been added to try and remove it… when possible.
Here it is already a Limited Edition package that cannot be removed, and from which it is not easy to get a piece of equipment that it includes. Similarly, the M60 version is listed from 141,800 euros instead of the 136,500 euros rightly stated in the video. Rims, metallic paint, etc. : add more than 5,000 euros of the options listed in the copy in our possession. Here, too, the delta corresponds to the Limited Edition Pro package imposed a priori, which we have already talked about.
In terms of the configurator and related features, the BMW website is undoubtedly the most difficult and restrictive to use among those manufacturers that offer electric vehicle deals. Be that as it may, at an equivalent level of equipment, Maxime Fontanier calculated a difference of only 4,000 euros with the iX xDrive50 tested in September last year. Have fun checking it out!
