our discovery of a small electric SUV in Paris

After Munich and Beijing, Smart #1 goes to Paris! So the one we found in concept state goes into production after a few adjustments. It was in the very center of the capital that we had the opportunity to discover the first electric SUV of the brand. So how is the Smart renaissance shaping up?

Yes, the brand officially unveiled (that?) Smart #1 – pronounced hashtag one – in Beijing on April 21st. For our part, we had to wait until May to calmly approach the electric SUV. Unprecedented platform, high-tech atmosphere, more generous format, exclusive details: here is the Smart #1 Launch Edition.

Smart #1 in terms of appearance: slight family resemblance

As you probably know, Smart hasn’t been at its best in recent years. With the release of its first compact electric SUV, Smart intends to increase sales while undertaking a radical transformation. The small formats so typical of the brand are over! Take a look at this Smart #1 at 4.27m long, 1.82m wide and 1.63m high. The compact SUV is very close in size to the MINI Countryman. The design is very close to the Munich concept with its urban and premium look. Costs and approvals are obligatory, only some details are developed without distorting the concept. Exit antagonistic doors and front lighting with grace. The headlights have indeed become a little thicker, and the bumper has holes on the sides.

The No. 1 car becomes elite due to its slightly rounded shapes and glazed surfaces that make up the entire car. Topped by a “floating” pavilion with a panoramic roof, the SUV retained flush handlebars and 19-inch rims. The electric platform and console give the car an attractive look. The light signature at the back is reminiscent of the latest Mercedes electric models. A small family resemblance is quite chic and successful for our taste. Finally, the Launch Edition launch model is limited to 1,000 pieces, including 100 for France. It features a unique two-tone white and champagne/gold finish, as well as matching side sills. There are also checkerboard rim inserts and a “Launch Edition” badge on the side skirts. Special attention deserves frameless doors, creating a noticeable effect of a premium class coupe.

Inside: techno and playful atmosphere

On board, the Smart #1 is high-tech, but also warm. More “pretty” than “computer”, the SUV meets us with a bright and colorful interior. The instrumentation and media are based on a 9.2-inch phone and a 12.8-inch touch interface. Various settings can be associated with a profile, with an avatar for fun. Note: The infotainment system is 100% designed for #1 SUV and has nothing to do with Mercedes’ MBUX system. Fans will appreciate the matte finish and customizable 64-color RGB lighting from the air vents to the center console. This connects the armrest and dash like a bridge and offers good storage underneath. For example, for a large bag. Ergonomics benefit from a comfortable steering wheel with thumb rest and equally comfortable controls.

Beats takes care of the audio part, which offers a powerful and bass-heavy musical experience. On the other hand, we weren’t able to review the entire interface as the software hasn’t been fully finalized yet. The Smart #1 seats seem to provide good front support, but this remains to be tested while driving. The rear seats are spacious thanks to the flat floor and headroom. The rear bench seat moves 13 cm, and the boot volume varies from 323 to 411 liters. Added to this is a small space of 15 liters in front, under the hood. Thus, Smart #1 promises to be quite roomy and practical in general, given its format. All with impeccable finish and assembly. Not to mention the chessboards on the panoramic roof and upholstery, as well as the “1 in 1000” plaque of this Launch Edition.

Smart #1: range up to 440 km

The smart-signed electric SUV relies on a 200 kW (272 hp) and 343 Nm rear engine, comfortable power and decent vehicle positioning. Smart #1 is powered by a 66 kWh battery and provides a specified range of 420 to 440 km. It can accept charging up to 150kW and comes with a standard 22kW charger. For reference, Smart announces a recharge from 10 to 80% in 30 minutes. All this on Geely’s modular SEA platform, which will also house the upcoming Volvo XC20. Finally, this first contact with Smart #1 is very promising.

The electric SUV is useful (2.75-inch long wheelbase!) and well-equipped as standard, but also and above all very much in line with the concept car. You won’t be disappointed if you were tempted by this in Munich! #1 comes in three trim levels: Pro+, Premium and Launch Edition. Non-Launch Edition models can be customized with different color combinations for the roof and body. What’s more, the second copy, presented in Premium trim, is dressed in “Future Green”! As for the price, there is still no official information, but we estimate the entrance ticket at around 35,000 euros.
