Open source careers become more lucrative as open source software becomes dominant and the talent gap persists

The tenth annual Open Source Jobs Report from the Linux Foundation and edX was released today, looking at open source recruiting, retention, and training trends.

The need for open source talent is high in light of the ongoing adoption of cloud computing and digital transformation across industries. As the COVID pandemic subsides, retaining and hiring employees has become more difficult than ever, with 73% of professionals saying it would be easy to find a new position, and 93% of employers are struggling to find enough qualified staff. While the majority of open source professionals (63%) said their job hasn’t changed in the past year, one in three said they quit or changed jobs, putting additional pressure on employers trying to retain employees with the right skills. . While it may not reach the “big layoff” level, this turnover puts more pressure on the business.

The Tenth Annual Open Source Jobs Report examines career trends in open source, the skills most in demand, the motivations of open source professionals, and how employers attract and retain qualified talent. Key takeaways from the open source job report include:

There is still a shortage of qualified open source professionals: The vast majority of employers (93%) say they have a hard time finding enough talent with open source skills. The trend continues: almost half (46%) of employers plan to increase hiring over the next six months, and 73% of open source professionals say it will be easy for them to find a new position if they want to relocate. on the.
Compensation has become a big difference: Financial incentives, including wages and bonuses, are the most common ways to retain talent: two in three open source professionals say higher wages will keep them from leaving their jobs. As flexible hours and remote work become the industry norm, lifestyle benefits become less important and financial incentives become a big differentiator.
Certificates reach a new level of importance: An overwhelming number of employers (90%) said they would pay employees to earn certifications, and 81% of professionals plan to add certifications this year, demonstrating the importance of these certifications. The 69% of employers who are more likely to hire a certified open source also confirm that in light of talent shortages, previous experience becomes less necessary if someone can demonstrate that they have the skills needed to get the job done.
Cloud’s continued dominance: Cloud and container skills remain the most in-demand skills this year, with 69% of employers looking for employees with these skills, and 71% of open source professionals agree that these skills are in high demand. This is not surprising: 77% of the companies surveyed said they have increased their use of cloud services over the past year. Linux skills also remain in demand (61% of hiring managers), which is not surprising given how much Linux supports cloud computing.
Cyber ​​security concerns are on the rise: Cybersecurity skills have the fourth biggest influence on hiring decisions, reported by 40% of employers, after cloud, Linux and DevOps. Among professionals, 77% say they would benefit from additional cybersecurity training, demonstrating that while the importance of security is more widely recognized, there is still more work to be done to truly deploy technology securely.
Companies are ready to spend more so as not to delay projects: According to hiring managers, training is currently the most common way to fill skill gaps (43%), followed by 41% who say they hire consultants to fill those gaps, a costly alternative and a step up from 37% reported last year. This corresponds to only 16% who are ready to postpone projects, demonstrating that digital transformation activities are a priority, even if they require expensive consultants.

This year’s report is based on survey responses from 1,672 open source professionals and 559 open source hiring respondents. The surveys were conducted online in March 2022.
