Opel Astra: which one to choose?

The new Opel Astra, unveiled in 2021, belongs to Opel’s long line of compact sedans. At first they were called Opel Kadett, and since 1991 the name Opel Astra has prevailed. The new Opel Astra is the sixth in the name, and unlike the five that preceded it, it is no longer 100% General Motors, as the German manufacturer has integrated PSA (and now Stellantis) and uses a group organ bank. That’s why the new Astra uses many elements of its French Peugeot 308 cousin, starting with the technical base and engines.

Studied Design

If the Opel Astra 6 owes much to the Peugeot 308, it stands out for its style. It is completely different from the 308 and we can applaud the work of the designers who gave the German sedan a real personality. This is similar to what they have already done for the Opel Corsa, Mokka, Crossland and Grandland, models based on the Peugeot 208, Peugeot 2008, Citroën C3 Aircross and Peugeot 3008. The Opel Astra line is flowing, with a long bonnet and pronounced shoulders. . We find the Vizor grille, which equips all of the brand’s new models with a long black strip that connects the headlights. They can be equipped with matrix technology, optional or standard with Ultimate finish. A black roof (two-tone body) adorns the high-end versions, and we find a nod to the Kadett in the form of shark gills on the ends of the rear end panels, similar to those that graced the Kadett D and E (produced between 1979 and 1993).

In the passenger compartment, modernity is confirmed by the “Pure Panel” as standard. This is a digital build consisting of a 10-inch instrument screen and another 10-inch for the infotainment system. We appreciate the infotainment screen interface designed like a smartphone interface, we also appreciate the physical controls (simple keys) located below the screen. A personal assistant can also be there, and when he answers the “Hi Opel” signal, he adjusts the radio, the temperature… The sophisticated atmosphere and high-quality materials give this Opel Astra a bit of an elite flavor. the equipment is high-tech and apart from the options or depending on the trim you can have a head-up display or even semi-autonomous driving systems (Intelli-Drive 1.0)… On the other hand, we are less enthusiastic about habitability, with a car length of 4.37 m, there is no inside seen, and the rear seats are in the low category average. The trunk is roomy: the petrol version has 422 liters, the 180-horsepower plug-in hybrid has only 352 liters.

It’s a 130bhp 1.5 that will appeal to big riders who will also have the choice of manual or automatic transmission. Finally, automatic transmission is only available for the 180-horsepower plug-in hybrid version, which, according to the data sheet, can travel up to 60 km on electric power. Safe behavior and comfort

Behind the wheel, with a platform borrowed from the Peugeot 308, you would expect sharp behavior, but this is not so from a French sedan. Attention, the new Astra is more manageable than the previous generation, but the direction is less sharp than on the Peugeot 308. Opel wants to be more accommodating and tactful. The damping is stiffer for better high-speed traction (when sold in the German market, this car will be eligible for unrestricted sections of the motorway). However, it doesn’t neglect comfort, and both driver and passenger can have seats approved by the German AGR association for back health. They can also be (for the most prestigious finish or as an option) equipped with electrically adjustable lumbar and hip supports.

The Astra sedan, well-positioned in terms of price-to-equipment ratio, went up in price three times in January, March and May before entering the showroom. However, it has lower prices than its two close cousins, the Peugeot 308 and DS 4, which are built in the same plant as it, in Rüsselsheim, Germany. This Opel Astra will be similar to the previous station wagon, but it will have to wait a bit, as the Opel Astra Sports Tourer model will not appear until 2023.
